LGBT Discrimination
1. 6 in 10 LGBT students report feeling unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation. You can encourage your classmates to accept LGBT students by promoting your views on social media.
2. 80% of gay and lesbian youth report severe social isolation.
3. 42% of people who are LGBT report living in an unwelcoming environment.

4. Historians note that in some cultures, homosexual behavior was not viewed as effeminate but as evidence of a man’s masculinity. Examples include the Celtic and Greek cultures.
5. The term LGBT or GLBT or LGBTQ was adopted in the 1990s and refers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (and queer or questioning) people. However, the term is not without contention with some groups, such as those who are intersex, who want to be included, and others who don’t want to be included.
6. The Day of Silence was first organized in 1996 by a group of students at the University of Virginia. Created for a class project on nonviolent protest, over 150 students participated that first year.
